Mouth Care

Mouth Care

Six care staff recently took part in the Care to smile in a training programme that highlights the issues of Mouth Care.

Good mouth care provided by care and nursing staff is important for maintaining residents’ dignity, confidence and health and wellbeing. It enables them to eat and drink comfortably, smile and speak with confidence and socialise. It is widely thought that brushing teeth is just about fresh breath and a white smile, but a clean healthy mouth is much more important than that. Poor oral hygiene may increase the risk of more severe health issues such as aspiration pneumonia, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and greatly increases the likelihood of pain and infection. Effective daily brushing daily will reduce these risks for residents.

The Girls are tasked with cascading down all the information regarding the care to smile programme to all the other staff.
